When does the trip take place?
The trip will take place from June 19th to June 27th 2010
What do I have to do to take part?
Send an e-mail to Joe Mc Grath jmcgrath@dit.ie
What sort of person takes part?
The group will be made up of around 25 people, both men and women, from all backgrounds, abilities and ages, although you must be 18 or over to take part. Whilst some take part with friends, many come on their own, so it's a great way of meeting new people.
Where will we stay whilst cycling?
Throughout the challenge we will spend six or seven nights in Yonki, a cross between Butlins and a Red Army convalescent home. Dormitory style so you get to know people better and save shitloads of money which we fund projects with, so you don't mind roughing it. That's right. You don't mind at all. So you don't.
Do I have to carry my own kit?
Throughout thetrip we will be accompanied by support vehicles which carry all our equipment and supplies. You will need to carry a day pack for items needed during the day; water, sunscreen, camera, snacks etc...
Am I fit enough?
This challenge is designed to suit people of average fitness. However, if you do not already cycle on a regular basis try and get in some practice before June 19th.
How does bike2belarus benefit?
Our aim is to raise at least €50,000 for the charity projects that we are funding in Belarus. Please see the PROJECTS section of our site to view past and on-going work. We will be getting matching funds from some nice people and organisations that Joe knows.
What will the weather be like?
Average temperature in June is 14-22°c with an average of 250mm of rain per month. Last year we experienced a heatwave, so plently of sunscreen is a good idea.
What should I pack:
Get yourself a rucksack (suitcases are really not encouraged- 'cos people bring unnecessary things like GHD's). Beg or borrow a sleeping bag, ground-sheet. Bring summer shirts, 2 shorts, jeans and a change of shoes. Bring casual gear for the nightlife.
What is included?
Return flight Dublin - Vilnius (its in Lithuania...2 countries for the price of one) - Dublin , Accommodation – , Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner provided. Full support with local guides, drivers, translators and medical personnel, Belarusian insurance, boat trip, entrance to pretty cool places.
Spending Money
Belarus is dirt cheap and its hard to spend money (seriously). You get bargains in the markets DVD's, software, some pretty odd clothing, russian fur hats etc. Alcohol is great value, food the same. €150-200 is more than enough. Nobody ever spends more than a 100 unless they are raving alcoholics, unlucky gamblers or has a brothel problem.
What is not included?
Insurance other than Belarusian insurance. You should consider taking out additional insurance to cover health/accidents etc
What else do I need?
A valid in date passport is essential. Visas are required for everybody. Please complete the visa application form on this site right now and post the completed form (with two passport size photos of yourself - your name printed on the back of each) to Joe Mc Grath, Dublin Institute of Technology, Aungier Street, Dublin 2.
What will the cycling be like?
Easy to challenging! Distances vary from 20-30km per day. The route is mostly on flat roads, but there are some small hills. Traffic is light on most roads. When we do pass through large towns please pay extra attention to our police escorts.. We will travel as a group.
Who organises the trip?
Joe Mc Grath does every bloody thing in Ireland and Igor Trisno makes a mess of every bloody thing in Belarus. Its hell and we want a Nobel Peace Prize for our efforts!
